Abstract

The Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) has been running actively for the past 3 years and has achieved much in terms of establishing curricula for all 58 medical specialties and setting in place new systems for the assessment of doctors' suitability for entry to the Specialist Register when they have not been through approved training programmes in the UK. This has not been without controversy. This article attempts to set out a balanced view of PMETB's aims and aspirations, and to document what it has done.
