Abstract
The protocols for quantum key distribution based on encoding in higher dimensional systems in Hilbert space were studied. The Benett-Brassard protocol using two complementary bases and two-dimensional states was extended to mutually complementary bases and orthogonal vectors in each base. Eavesdropping strategies and error rate were also studied. The multilevel quantum key distribution was realized by time multiplexing and phase encoding in an interferometric system.
