Abstract
We discuss the status of photonics technology and review its possible evolution by way of several representative examples of emerging research areas, which could have a significant impact over a long-term, say 10-year perspective. The selected areas are considered potentially capable of providing the quantum leap progress necessary to solve some of the shortcomings of current photonics technology. Integrated photonic devices, Intersubband transitions, Photonic crystals, Coherent interactions, Quantum information, Quantum communications, Metal optics, Plasmon optics.
