Abstract
The quantum limit of a laser amplifier used as a detector is calculated. It is shown that the amplified output can be quantum correlated to the detector readout. However, as an information tap, the amplifying detector is no better than a lossless linear beamsplitter due to the added spontaneous emission noise.
