Abstract

As the best fibre optical systems are approaching fundamental quantum limits the role of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle in communications has shifted from being of academic interest to becoming an (un)practical restriction. This paper reviews recent progress on low noise photon manipulation and discusses the potential impact on optical networks.
