Abstract
Excerpta Medica—which since the mid-1970s has become increasingly better known as the online database EMBASE—actually began life as the Excerpta Medica Foundation, an international nonprofit organization established in the Netherlands in August 1946 by a group of Dutch medical practitioners. The principal aim of the foundation was "to further the progress of medical knowledge by making information available to the medical and related professions on all significant basic research and clinical findings reported in any language throughout the world.".
