    Abstract

Introduction The use of red blood cell concentrates (RBCs) is one of the indicators that facilitates the measurement of transfusion practice and the maintenance of the balance between supply and demand of hemocomponents. Objective To evaluate RBC consumption as a strategy to promote periodic analysis in intrahospital blood banks for continuous improvement of stock maintenance, and hemocomponent consumption. Materials and Methods Retrospective study using primary data under acceptance criteria with application of descriptive and nonparametric Spearman statistics. The probability of not using the requested units and the utilization rate were calculated. Results 10,062 annual requests were determined and 9,391 CGRs were dispatched with a median of 2,029 CGRs/year. Returns totaled 170, mainly due to medical criteria. The probability of transfusion averaged 1.6% over five years, with a 9.8% excess order. Traumatology led in requests, followed by hematology (p<0.005). Discussion There is an excess of requests and a high probability of transfusion that affects the availability of RGC. Periodic audits would allow establishment improvements in transfusion practice.
