Abstract

A new species of Mikania Willd. (Compositae) is described from the tepui-like formations of the Cordillera del Cóndor in southeastern Ecuador. It is related to species with corymbiform inflorescences, style branch apices with short papillae, stem nodes with only a transverse line and corollas with a narrowly funnelform or campanulate throat. Among them, the most similar species is M. flabellata Rusby ex B.L.Rob., known from western Venezuela, Colombia and from a single gathering collected in northernmost Ecuador. A taxonomic discussion and information about distribution, habitat and ecology are provided, as well as pictures of living plants. According to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, a provisional risk of extinction status of Vulnerable is assigned to the new species.
