Abstract
After analyzing the important passages devoted to the spell in Lucan’s Pharsalia and Verdi’s melodrama Un ballo in maschera, it is clear that Celestina’s counterpart has a dual function: derivative in relation to the former and original in relation to the latter. Elements absent in the Pharsalia refer to La Celestina from Verdi’s version; a series of gaps in Lucan’s spell formulated by Celestina require, conversely, a complement abundantly provided by the sectoral tradition of the Middle Ages. Alongside these important objectives the present study seeks, through extensive medieval documentation, to solve other Celestina-related problems linked to magic, such as the parody of the genre or the aspects related to psychology, surprisingly absent from the spell put into Celestina’s mouth.
