Institutions are increasingly expected to demonstrate their relevance to their local communities and the impact of their work on society. But how can universities see how their research is represented in mainstream media, a key source of information that helps frame societal perception? In this project with the Analytics and institutional effectiveness team at Virginia Tech, the ICSR research team is using AI and sentiment analysis on Newsflo data to facilitate detection and sentiment of media coverage of research. By assessing trends and how the research is perceived the team hopes to take a more proactive approach to the promotion of new research findings.
